Fundamentalist sympathiser 'wins control of billion-pound council'

Lutfur Rahman, the fundamentalist sympathiser sacked from the Labour Party for his links with a Muslim supremacist group and several powerful local businessmen, has been elected the executive mayor of Tower Hamlets, giving him almost complete power over a billion-pound budget, sources on both sides say. Labour’s candidate, Helal Abbas, has been substantially defeated, we are told. Turnout was just over 25 per cent.

If true, it is Christmas come early for London journalists – but desperately bad news for one of Britain’s poorest boroughs.

More later.
